The Ukrainian-British City Club is fully committed to supporting worthy Ukrainian causes, and independent high education in Ukraine is one of them. The Ukrainian Catholic University is one of such independent institutions - it is an open academic community living the Eastern Christian tradition and forming leaders to serce with professional excellence in Ukraine and internationally. Because it does not receive any support from the Ukrainian state, it has to raise funds to build campus facilities, in particular, student housing to accommodate worthy but poor students from Ukraine, Georgia and Belarus. On 11 October 2008 the first fundraising gala and dinner for 200 guests was held in Kyiv, Ukraine, which was attended by the First Lady of Ukraine Mrs Kateryna Yushchenko.
On 8-15 May 2009, the Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University Rev. Dr. Borys Gudziak will visit the United Kingdom to raise awareness of the UCU. As part of his visit, the Ukrainian-British City Club is co-organising the Cocktail Reception in his honour at the Embassy of Ukraine on 12 May 2009 and is organising the exclusive VIP lunch in Dr. Gudziak's honour on 13 May, which will be hosted by John Grogan MP, the Chairman of the All Party Ukraine Parliamentary Group at the Houses of Parliament.
The Ukrainian Embassy Reception will take place at the Ukrainian Embassy, 60 Holland Park, Lonodn W11 3SJ (nearest tube "Holland Park").
Guest speakers:
- His Excellency Dr. Ihor Kharchenko, Ambassador of Ukraine
- Rev. Dr Borys Gudziak, Ph.D, Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv)
